Brett's magnificent paintings feature her usual array of folk details, and this time, intricate knitting tracks, ornate embroidery, the crusty, peeling texture of the birch bark borders and the exquisite patterns found in Baba's homey rooms.

Nicki finds his mitten, and takes it home, but Baba is left to wonder about how it became so enormously stretched out. That mouse tickles the bear's nose and he sneezes, dislodging all of the animals at once. First comes a mole, then a rabbit, a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, a fox, a bear and, finally, a mouse. Sure enough, the first time Nicki is out, he drops one and some animals promptly move into its snug wool interior. After you have read it, you can go to Jan Brett’s web page for bookmarks, coloring pages and games for each of her books.Baba, Nicki's grandmother, knits pure white mittens for him, even though she is afraid that he will lose them in the snow. Make some hot cocoa and cuddle up with The Mitten today. They help a young reader predict what will happen next. A detail that I have always enjoyed about her illustrations are the panels on each side of the main page. The expressions on the faces of the animals as they squeeze help us imagine how cramped it got inside. As the mitten stretches and expands to fit each animal, you can sense the tension of the yarn.

Jan Brett’s illustrations give life to the story. It is a regular sized child’s sweater, but the arms have been stretched out to twice their natural length because I used to pull them down over my hands and use them to keep warm. I have a sweater that was hand-knit by my Grandma. One of the reasons I love this story is because I know how stretchy homemade mittens and sweaters are. Growing up in the north, I was well acquainted with mittens and sweaters. Jan Brett, author and illustrator of The Mitten retells a classic story with amazingly detailed illustrations.
