The actual story is completely suffocated and tests the patience of even the most long suffering reader. But I’m not looking for a play by play journal of all the days of someone’s life. Even Corin, apparently queer and aro-ace, had the potential to be a very interesting character. The bare bones of the Arcane Ascension universe had the potential to be interesting. It’s because pure stream of consciousness is unfocused, irrelevant and distracts from the plot. And there’s a reason why we learn writing structure and how to make our points clearly when in school. This is literally stream of consciousness writing – Corin’s stream of consciousness. His every thought is dutifully transcribed across 600 pages, and most of these thoughts are (a) cringe, (b) extremely over thought and nitpicky, and (c) he will to back and forth on an idea randomly. And then there’s this book, serving as the godly embodiment of that phenomenon.Ĭorin Cadence is the weirdest character I’ve come across.
There are books that suffer the flaw of too much exposition. In fact, never in my life have I come across a book this boring in all the realms of fiction. If you somehow liked the sound of any of the above, Sufficiently Advanced Magic is still not the book for you. Or maybe imagine that Harry was an obsessive journaler who recorded his every last thought, no matter how irrelevant or unimportant. Imagine the entirety of Advanced Potion Making typed out into the middle of Half Blood Prince. Imagine Harry Potter, except with every professor’s every lecture transcribed word for word. Corin is prepared to go to any lengths to achieve his goals, but once inside the tower, things do not go as planned at all.
And third, he needs to find out what happened to his brother, Tristan, after he disappeared in the Tower years ago. Second, he needs to obtain a Combat Attunement so he can uphold his family’s proud duelling tradition. Synopsis: Corin Cadence has a lot riding on his judgement trial in the Tower.
